Go West
If you like the West Side, and are the sort of person who prefers an old craftsman bungalow to a new build, or would rather walk ten minutes to the supermarket than drive, there are some good deals waiting for you in West Seattle. The North Admiral neighborhood is close to everything, and because of the real estate slowdown it’s much easier than it used to be to find a house in the $400-600K range. Here are a few worth checking out:
2307 45th Ave SW
Seattle, WA 98116
This is a nice-looking craftsman-style house in a great location. It’s four blocks from two grocery stores, three blocks to a Blockbuster Video, four blocks to a Starbucks, and more (you can see Hiawatha Playfield on the map–a big park that adjoins West Seattle High).
Here’s another craftsman that’s roughly the same number of blocks to nearly everything you need:
2202 42nd Ave SW
Seattle, WA 98116
This one has recently been completely renovated, so it’s more modern than true to the craftsman look, but it’s worth checking out. This place has a nice size yard and a separate garage too, which I don’t see very often in North Admiral.
Or maybe a Tudor is more your speed. This one is a bit farther from the center of everything, but it makes up for it with space: three bedrooms, 2.25 baths, and 2,200 square feet. Okay, it’s just beyond the $600K top end that I mentioned a moment ago, but not by much.
1906 44th Ave SW
Seattle, WA 98116
As far as location goes, one of the best places to be close to (but not too close) is the intersection of California and Admiral. In addition to the local businesses I mentioned above, there are restaurants, a library, a theater, bus stops, and lots more. If a high Walkscore is what you’re looking for (see another Walkscore-related post here), then a house anywhere within a few blocks of this intersection will keep you on your feet. Of course, there are other important intersections in West Seattle, but I’ll save those for another post.
